Divorcing as the parent of a child with special needs

Divorce can be hard for people whether they are wealthy or facing financial challenges, but there are certain instances when this process can be especially tough. For example, parents of children with special needs will face additional tensions and decisions as they bring their marriage to an end, for a variety of reasons. If you are worried about how your divorce will impact your special needs child, it is important to prepare for the changes that lie ahead and, if possible, discuss these matters with your child's other parent.

As the parent of a special needs child, you should do your best to provide your child with a sense of security and ensure them that they will still be loved. Your child's needs must be taken into consideration as you work through your divorce, with respect to issues such as child custody and the responsibilities that parents will take on. Treatments, medical needs and other responsibilities may also need to be taken into consideration, and it can be tough for parents to adjust to these changes. For example, if a parent works many hours each week, they may struggle to accustom themselves to life as a single parent with full custody.

Each divorce case is unique and necessitates an individualized approach, and this is especially true for the parents of special needs children. It is crucial to keep your child's best interests in mind.
